Allan was born on August 2, 1945 in Guelph, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Guelph, OAC in 1964A. On October 14, 1967 Allan married Dianne Campbell. From 1967 to 1973 he worked as a Fieldman for the Ontario Guernsey Association, traveling around Ontario. His love of Guernsey cattle and his dream of becoming a dairy farmer were achieved in 1973 when Belroyal Farms was founded starting on a rented farm in Breslau, Ontario. In 1976 the farm in Listowel was purchased and the family of 5 moved to Elma Township and were welcomed by a supportive and friendly community.

As an active participant in the community, Allan served on many boards and committees. These included the Guernsey Association, 4-H, Listowel Agriculutaral Society, Trillium Mutual Insurance and Trinity United Church. He also travelled within Canada to judge Guernsey Cattle Shows. After 21 years of milking cows, Allan started a new chapter in his agricultural career by getting into the poultry business in 1994.

Allan was a loving husband and proud father and grandfather who enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his family. He and Dianne had many hobbies and past times that they shared together. Some favourites include dancing, traveling, playing cards, theatre, going to the cottage and spending time with friends. His positive attitude over the past 13 years as he battled cancer was an inspiration to many.
