Obituary for Donald Haight

Donald Haight
Donald Haight passed away at Livingstone Manor, Listowel, on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in his 93rd year.

Donald Harrison Haight was the husband of the late Ila Haight, and father of Fred Haight of Listowel, and Nancy Guice and her husband Matt of Ridgefield Park, NJ, and father-in-law of Paul Verdon of Los Angeles, CA.

He was predeceased by his son Michael Haight, and by his sister Helen Burrell.

Donald Haight was born in London Ontario almost 93 years ago, and grew up there during the Great Depression. He saw the young Ila Stratton in a play, and cited her as the girl he wished to marry. Two years later, they were introduced, and they never parted. Don worked in the automobile industry all his life, and was an excellent accountant and businessman. In 1958-59, he moved to Listowel to join Harvey Krotz' Ford dealership. During his 25 years there as business manager and accountant, Harvey Krotz grew into a large dealership that drew customers from far away, and helped establish Listowel as "Car City." Don and Ila raised 3 children, Fred, Michael, and Nancy, all of who attended LDSS, and went on to enjoy careers in music, film and politics. Don believed in public duty. He served as President of the Rotary Club, Chairman of the PARCC Commission, an elder of Trinity United Church, and ran for public office. He had the foresight to propose a traffic bypass for Listowel decades ago. After Harvey retired, Don became a co-owner of the business in the 1980's when it enjoyed great success. At the height of this success, Don retired, to make the most of the latter years. He and Ila took 21 cruises, and spent 17 winters in Florida with close friends from Listowel. He kept active and fit, and enjoyed skiing, golf, and tennis-but also Bridge, which he taught. Don was an entrepreneur, who was always in pursuit of improvement; he built several houses, only to sell them and build something better. He, Harvey Krotz, and David Kilberg were partners in a daring attempt to manufacture the new and unique Avion aircraft in Listowel. Don prized his independence, and maintained as much control over his own life as possible up to his very last day.

Friends may call at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 3rd at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Steven Cox officiating.
