Obituary for Alice Vine

Alice Vine ~ At Owen Sound Hospital on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, Mrs. Alice Selena (Annett) Vine formerly of Listowel, in her 93rd year.

Beloved wife of the late Elmer "Bill" Vine with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. Dear mother of Paul Vine (Helen King) Owen Sound, and Kathryn Vine-Smith (Derrick Smith) Guelph.
Predeceased by son Richard John in infancy, sister Mildred Acheson and brother-in-law James Acheson.

Alice was born February 24th, 1926 in Grey Township, daughter of the late Percy and Elsie Annett. Growing up on a farm meant she didn’t shy away from hard work. Between the ages of 13 and 18 she held several jobs (besides chores at home) which included working in the Atwood general store, grading eggs in Newry, and a basket factory in Grimsby. After the sudden death of her father, Alice became a Bell telephone switchboard operator to help support the family – a job she continued to enjoy for 11 years.

Alice and Bill were married in 1956. They set up housekeeping on the second Vine dairy farm just outside of Listowel. A gardener and canner extraordinaire, nothing went to waste. At one point Alice raised rabbits for extra income. “Vine Haven”, their cottage on Lake Huron, provided a little place to get away to on weekends and holidays: retirement allowed them to spend more time there with friends and family.

Alice had a variety of interests. In 1971 she decided to take oil painting classes at the Listowel High School and produced many canvases over the years. She was a member of the Trowbridge United Church Women’s Institute and Tralee Women’s Institute. After selling the farm in 1976 and moving to Listowel, she continued to maintain a large vegetable garden and enjoyed tending the flowerbeds. Keen to try something different, she decided to become a 4-H leader for an “Outdoor Living” course. An avid knitter; there was always a basket full of handmade socks free for the taking.

Alice enjoyed the company of family, friends and neighbours. That network of support continued after moving to Kelso Villa in Owen Sound. No matter where she called home, the kettle was always on for a cup of tea.

Visitation will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Saturday, February 9, 2019 11:30 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 12:30 p.m. Interment in Elma Centre Cemetery, Atwood.

Memorial donations to Tom Thomson Art Gallery (cheque only) or Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
