Obituary for Leo Hovius

Lijkel ‘Leo’ Hovius, of Listowel, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at the Ritz Lutheran Villa, Mitchell, on Wednesday February 21, 2018, in his 100th year.

Husband of Bonnie Hovius for 70 years.

Father of Pat and Murray Koetsier of Harriston, and Jack and Anna Hovius of R.R. 4, Listowel, and father-in-law of John Wassenaar of Thunder Bay.

Grandfather of Dave and Vicki Wassenaar of Thunder Bay, Richard and Kerry Wassenaar of Ottawa, Jim Wassenaar or Calgary, AB, Barbara Wassenaar of Ottawa, Andrea and Tim Bootsma of Harriston, Carolyn and Keith Giesbrecht of Clive, AB, Sharon and Craig Miedema of St. George, Jeff Koetsier of Harriston, Brenda and John Brouwer of Troy, Kevin and Samantha Koetsier of Gorrie, Cara Hovius of Toronto, Alanda and Ted Fuller of St. Marys, Jason Hovius of Ethel, and Heather Hovius of Listowel.

Great-grandfather of Taylor, Isaac, and Heidi Wassenaar,Austin, Jordan, and Luke Bootsma, Cayden Giesbrecht, Cameron, Josiah, and Zachary Miedema, Faith, Cor, Noelle, and Annie Brouwer, Leo and Rowan Koetsier, and Aaron and Caleb Fuller.

Predeceased by his daughter Shirley Wassenaar and brother Bernard Hovius.

Leo was born in Bellingwolde in the Netherlands on September 25, 1918 and grew up dairy farming with his father. In 1948 he married Boukje ‘Bonnie’ Wierenga, and 3 weeks later they sailed to Canada on a troop ship. Seeing no opportunities to farm at home, they immigrated to Canada hoping to have a farm of their own. After working in various locations across Ontario they finally purchased a dairy farm near Listowel in 1962 where he farmed for over 20 years until he retired. They enjoyed a long and happy retirement together in their Listowel home until 2017 when they moved to the Ritz Lutheran Villa in Mitchell.

Visitation will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Listowel on Tuesday, February 27th at 11:30 a.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.
