Obituary for Bill Harper

Harper, Bill
July 20, 1933 – May 17, 2023

William ‘Bill’ Ernest Harper of Listowel for the past 13 years, and formerly of R.R.3, Pontypool, for 57 years, passed away at Wingham Hospital on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the age of 89.

Survived by his partner Beverley (Smith) Harper. Father of Debbie Evans of Quesnel, B.C. Grandfather of Robert Evans of Edmonton, AB., Patricia and Heath Turcotte of 150 Mile House, B.C., and Andrew (Will) Harper of Quesnel, B.C. Great-grandfather of Braiden Evans of Whitehorse, Kaleb Evans of Chestermere, AB., Zachary Moller of Quesnel B.C., Dalton Evans of Kamloops. B.C., and Peregrine Schroeder of Quesnel B.C.

Dearly loved by his twin sister Barbara Clark and her husband Bill of Dorset, sister-in-law Donna Dempsey and husband Fred of Newtonville, and by his many nieces and nephews. Fondly remembered by Bev’s family: her sons Brant Harper of Listowel, and Graham Harper and wife Heather of Orillia and their son Hayden, brother Lloyd Smith and wife Joyce of Comox, B.C., sisters Yvonne Dubois and Marilyn Bennett, cousins Nancilee Clausius and Archie Gilbert, and June Smith, all of London.

Predeceased by his wife Wilma Harper, son Ronald, daughter Patricia, sister Edith Turner, and by his son-in-law Walter Evans.

Bill grew up on Brenton Street, East York, Ontario. He served in the Armed Forces for 3 years from 1951-1954, with 2 years in Germany with the 27th brigade. On March 3, 1957, he married Wilma May Wilson. She passed away in 2007.

Bill was more than another long-time employee of the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario for the 39 years he worked there. He was a man of strength, artistic ability, practical skills, and fun. When not working, Bill could be found puttering around his family home on Mosport Rd., making stone walls, planting fruits, vegetables, and flowers into the gardens, or in the garage preserving the harvest.

His home with Bev was full of life; gladiolus, lilies, and hostas brightened the outside while a game of cards was oft to be seen or heard from within. The noise of crokinole and Skip Bo were silent only for a few seconds as Bill stopped to take a bite of a butter tart- his favourite treat.

The family is especially thankful to Stephen & Darlene Thompson for all of their help.

Private family arrangements have been entrusted to the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel. Interment will be held in Fallis Cemetery, Bethany, Ontario.

Memorial donations to Wingham & District Hospital or Listowel Memorial Hospital would be appreciated.
