Obituary for Elsie Karges

Elsie Karges ~ It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elsie Irene (Harding) Karges on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at Woodingford Lodge, Woodstock in her 93rd year.

She was a remarkable woman that enjoyed her friends and family, as well as walking, bicycling, curling and playing bridge. Elsie, accomplished many things in her wonderful and full life; including being the first woman to sit on Listowel council (1972 – 1988) and being the first woman Warden of Perth County (1982). She remained an active volunteer in the community after her retirement from politics.

Elsie was born on January 4, 1930 in Howick Township to the late Norman and Janet (Doubledee) Harding.

She moved to Listowel where she married Oliver Karges on July 19, 1949. They raised three sons, Donald (Lesley) Karges of Woodstock, Alan (Rose) Karges of Trail, B.C., and Peter (Debbie) Karges of Port Rowan. Elsie was the proud grandmother of Tracy Dalgleish (Ben), Kelly Karges (Kamar Gall), and Reid Karges (Jelisa Daniel), and great-grandmother to Megan Dalgleish and Ruby Karges.

Sister to Reita Markovich of Edmonton, Alberta, and sister-in-law to Donalda Cunningham of Kitchener. Predeceased by her sisters Jean Wilson, Margaret Wood, and her brother Elmer Harding.

Elsie an avid conservationist , will be buried in a natural burial site in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Guelph, Ontario. She has asked that memorial donations be sent to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to plant trees in North Perth.

A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held at Trinity United Church, Listowel, on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation one hour prior, and reception to follow. Rev. Beth Kerr officiating.
