Obituary for Jackie Smith
Jackie Smith ~ With the combination of sadness and joy we say goodbye to Grace Jacqueline Smith (Gage) of Listowel as she passes from this life on to the next, on Thursday, November 26, 2020, at the age of 91.
She is survived by 4 children, David (Ellen) Smith of Coaldale AB, Sandy (Dave) Dorland of Phoenix AZ, Alyson (Wayne) Nickel of Lakelet, and Colin (Deb) Smith of Chepstow. Also survived by her brother Geoff Gage in Stratford.
Remembered by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband of 59 years William “Bill”, her son Gordon in childhood, one great-grandchild in infancy, and her two sisters, Eleanor Rutley and Louise Marritt
“Jackie” to her friends and “Buddy” to her family, was born in Toronto and talked fondly of her days attending Jarvis Collegiate. After attaining her Teacher’s Certificate, she began teaching at SS11 in East Gwillimbury. It is here she met Bill and began her life as a farm wife in 1947.
In 1967 they moved to Harriston to continue farming. She continued her teaching at Howick Central School. Many former students had written personal notes on the positive influence she had on their life which she kept. Her faith also was a passion and she was actively involved in leading and teaching basic Christian principles through her example.
After retiring from the farm, Jackie and Bill travelled Canada and the United States, enjoying fishing and camping plus visiting their family. Whenever a family need arose, Jackie did not hesitate to help. She actively babysat great-grandchildren into her eighties, taking them swimming or to learning events.
An avid reader she encouraged all her family to read and enjoy the pleasure of books. Jackie was also the family historian, tracking family back over 400 years and documenting for all to know the heritage.
Private family arrangements have been entrusted to the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, with interment in Queensville Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial donations to Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
