Obituary for Nel Van Winden

Nel Van Winden ~ Peacefully, with her family by her side, on Sunday, May 12, 2019, Mrs. Cornelia Anna ‘Nel’ (Verburg) Van Winden of Listowel, passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital in her 87th year.

Loving wife of Arnold J. Van Winden for 61 years.

Cherished mother of John and Melanie Van Winden of Atwood, Stephen and Lisa Van Winden of Paris, Diana and Michael Cunningham of London, and mother-in-law of Lisa Van Winden of Kitchener.

Dear grandmother of Stephanie (Reid), Denise (Greg), Eric, Justin, Andrew (Jordine), Caroline, Daniel (Stephanie), Adam (Sam), Noah, Lauren, and Scott, and great-grandmother of Darren, McKenzie, and Helen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands.

Survived by her sister Thea (Wynand) Jansen of Barrhead, Alberta, and her sisters-in-law Annie Verburg, and Riet Verburg of the Netherlands.

Predeceased by her son Arnold Van Winden (2012), daughter-in-law Linda (Garner) Van Winden (2014), and four sisters and seven brothers: Steef (Riet) Verburg, Sjaan (Henk) Van der Ploeg, Arie (Nel) Verburg, Lou (Riet) Verburg, Ben Verburg, Sr. Riet Verburg, Riet (Nol) Van Wijk, Rev. Kees Verburg, Cornelia (Jan) Vollebregt, Jan Verburg, and Koos (Annie) Verburg.

Nel was born in Pijnacker, the Netherlands and came to Canada in 1958 with her husband to farm and start a family. They first settled in Claremont, Ontario, moved to Hawkstone, Ontario to farm with Arnold’s brother, Wim, and later moved to Listowel, Ontario in 1972 to establish Delfia Farms Ltd. Nel was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Listowel, where she belonged to the Catholic Women’s League. She was also a member of the Maple Leaf Women’s Institute (previously Listowel East Women’s Institute).

The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Suggit and the staff at Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance and the North Perth Family Health Team for their care and support.

Visitation will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with prayers at 1:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Listowel, on Friday, May 17th at 11:00 a.m.

Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.
