Obituary

Ole Rasmussen ~ died peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on Sunday, August 25, 2019, surrounded by family, a few months shy of his 88th birthday.

Husband of Elly (Nielsen) Rasmussen.

Father of Hans and Phyllis Rasmussen of Bloomington, Illinois, Lars and Cathy Rasmussen of Harriston, and Inger and Bo Ivo of Listowel.

Grandfather of Erik Rasmussen of Colorado, Aimee Rasmussen (Mike) of Port Elgin, and Ole Ivo (Liz), Aksel Ivo, and Anders Ivo, all of Listowel. Great-grandfather of Owen, Annelise, and Roland.

A strong, little man, he also lived his life peacefully caring for pigs and later sheep in a farming career that spanned more than 60 years in Denmark and Canada. He was born in Mern, Denmark in 1931, a boy during World War II, he grew with a strong spirit that would serve him well when faced with challenges of life. He served in the Danish Army with a hobby of photography that he earned a little extra income from.
When his frisky dog tore the coat of a little girl, her big sister came to give him a talking to. That big sister became his wife, Elly. and they built a life in 61 years of marriage.

Their early years of farming in Denmark were met with great hardships and they decided to immigrate to Canada for a fresh start. Hearing good things about Canada from his brother, they set sail in 1960 with $50 in their pockets, a two-year old son, Hans, at their side and baby Lars on the way.

Ole was working as a hired hand when their daughter Inger was born. He soon became a farm manager as they scrimped and saved to buy their own farm in 1968 in Fordwich, Ont.

But challenges continued, with a devastating barn fire in 1986. They didn’t give up – and switched from pigs to raising sheep where they became active in the sheep association and made many good friends.

They retired from farming when he was in his 70s moving to Mildmay. There, they hosted many family gatherings especially Christmases with their growing family. In later years, they lived quietly in Listowel.
His Lutheran faith helped him through challenging times as his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren were christened in the faith, wearing a gown Elly made for them.

He always had a twinkle in this eye especially when he pulled mischievous tricks that made the family laugh. Not only did he have a sweet tooth for Elly’s baking, he also had a sweet smile when he saw a baby.

Visitation will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kurtzville, on Monday, September 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Kurt Reinhardt officiating.

So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Inger you may remember me from a long time ago. Our fathers have a very similar background coming from Europe as immigrants and buying farms. My father is the same age but hasn't left his farm yet. Thinking of you and your family.
