Obituary

Roy Martin ~ At Listowel Memorial Hospital, on Friday, May 17, 2019, Roy B. Martin of Gowanstown, in his 82nd year.

Loving husband of Edith (Steckle) Martin.

Father of Barry & Shelley Martin of St. Catharines, Brian Martin of Listowel, and Brad & Chandra Martin, and Michael Martin, all of Gowanstown.

Grandfather of Taylor, Chelsea, Stephanie, Alicia, Jeanette, Jill, Kyle and Heidi, and Devon, step-grandfather of Emily & James, Howard & Heather, Ken, Jessie & Scott, Rebecca, Chris & Renee, and Carsen & Jessica, and step-great-grandfather of Madelyn, Kamryn, Bodie, Evelynn, Quentin, Kynnlee, and Melody.

Brother of Eileen & Clarence Heintz of Waterloo, and Ida & Aden Brubacher of Elmira, and brother-in-law of Alice Martin of Brussels, Mildred Martin of Elmira, Elizabeth Weber of St. Jacobs, Becky & Eugene Bender of Goderich, and Stuart & Ruth Ann Steckle of Zurich.

Predeceased by his parents Isaiah and Lydian (Brox) Martin, brothers Elmer, Aden, and Howard, brothers-in-law Abner Weber and Amsey Martin, and daughter-in-law Cathy (McGugan) Martin.

Roy moved to Lot 12, Concession 7 of Wallace Township in November, 1960 with his wife, Edith to manage a farm owned by his employer Abner Brubacher. At the same time, Roy built houses for Mr. Brubacher in Palmerston until he bought the farm next spring. He started out with chickens, pigs and dairy, eventually focusing solely on dairy and doing some custom work for neighbours. Roy lived in the same place for the rest of his life, raising four boys who eventually married and gave him many grandchildren. In 1987, he and his son Brad began a partnership in the farm. One year later, Roy sold his share to his son Brian.

Roy began making maple syrup in 1964 with 250 taps. Today, his son Brad, who took over the operation in 2014, has 3100 taps. Between 1982 and 1999, Roy and Edith hosted many family, church and community groups for meals in their pancake house.

Roy served 50 years as a board member of the Mennonite Aid Union/Max Canada insurance company. He also served on the board of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association and was an elder and board member at various churches throughout the years.

During his retirement, Roy and Edith made several trips to Lake Havasu City, Arizona making many great friendships there. He could also be found having coffee, laughing and sharing stories with his friends at McDonald’s or Tim Horton’s most days.

His main passion was horses and working in the bush. Roy was a devout Christian with a strong faith in Jesus as His Lord and Saviour. He loved worship and gospel music and would listen for hours to Edith play the piano.

The family wish to express their deep gratitude to the staff of both Listowel Memorial and Grand River Regional hospitals for their attentive and professional care of Roy during his illness.
