Obituary for Tom Blackmore

Thomas Garfield Blackmore, fondly known as TCat, of Listowel, passed away at Fordwich Village Nursing Home on Saturday, July 31, 2021, in his 91st year.

Tom was born and raised in Listowel, Ontario, the only child of Glen and Ina Blackmore. Following his graduation from Listowel District Secondary School, he joined his father’s businesses, W.G. Blackmore and Son Chrysler Dealership, and then the Western Tire Store. This was followed by several small businesses that he owned and operated. Tom married his wife, Margaret Helen Hamilton, in 1954, and they had two sons, David and Mark.

The highlight of Tom’s life was his 39 years of service as a volunteer with the Listowel Fire Department, including 34 years as the Chief. He was well known throughout the province and was a respected leader in improving volunteer fire services. He and Marg were known for hosting great pool parties for the firefighters and their children, “the ankle biters,” and before and after parties for the annual Fireman’s Ball. He was a loyal citizen of Listowel, involved for many years as a member of K-40, and served on several community committees. He was an avid snowmobiler, boater, fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed playing golf in his latter years. He delighted in his grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Caressant Care Retirement Home in Listowel, and the Fordwich Village Nursing Home for your kindness and the care you gave Tom in the last few years of his life.

Tom is survived by his children, David and Shelley Blackmore of Wroxeter, and Mark Blackmore and Jody Davey of Craighurst, his grandchildren, Ben and Rochelle Blackmore of Gorrie, Josh and Stephanie Blackmore of Walkerton, Amy Dicks and Zlatko Depikolozvane of Erin, Christine Blackmore and Mark Horyn of Mississauga, Stephanie Blackmore and Josh Wilks of Toronto, Elliott and Kathleen Blackmore of Wainwright, Alberta, Matthew Davey, and Brett Davey of Barrie, and his great-grandchildren, Malina, Hunter, Boyd and Jayden. Tom was the uncle of Cara and Jon Nye of Amherst Island, and Meagan Daley and Marc Parent of Quebec City. He was loved and will be missed by his Frisby cousins who were like siblings, Betty Murray and James Elliott and their families.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret, his parents Ina (Frisby) and Glen Blackmore, his parents-in-law Marie (McBain) and George Hamilton, his sister-in-law Donna Dickson, his brothers-in-law Tom Daley and Doug Dickson, his nephew Shawn Daley, and his cousin Sue Charlton.

A private family funeral will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Thursday, August 5th, at 11:00 a.m., the Rev. Jeff Hawkins officiating. The funeral will be live-streamed.
