Obituary for Vera Thompson

As her time on this earth ended and the next part of her journey began, Vera Cavell (McIntosh) Thompson of Listowel, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, after 104 years living a full life.

She was born on January 24, 1918 in Tarbutt Township to the late Peter and Lucy (Braniff) McIntosh.

Wife of the late T. Campbell Thompson.

Mother of Richard and Hannah Thompson of Listowel, and Elizabeth Thompson of Listowel.

Grandmother of Reg and Judy Thompson of Ilderton, Rod Thompson and Karen St. Hill of Rockwood, and Laurie Thompson and John Wilson of Mill Bay, British Columbia.

Great-grandmother of 6, and great-great-grandmother of 9.

Predeceased by son Robert Thompson, and daughter-in-law Carol Thompson her sisters Ellen Alexander, Alice Reid, her brothers Roy McIntosh, James McIntosh, Merle McIntosh, Charles McIntosh

The McIntosh family relocated from Sault Ste. Marie to Wallace Township in 1929 and began farming. Vera married Campbell Thompson in 1936, and they settled in Elma Township. Farming was their life’s choice.

Vera was a dedicated and faithful member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Listowel, and a member of its Britton WMS. Vera taught sewing and trained young girls in her community in homemaking. She was a 4-H leader, a member of the Women’s Institute, Rebekah Lodge, and Listowel Agricultural Society. One of her other talents was oil painting, and she competed at the Fall Fairs. She enjoyed music, needlework, playing cards with family and friends, and especially Christmas and family celebrations.

Vera left behind her love for all of her family, knowing she was blessed by them and by the many loving times shared together.

A celebration of Vera’s life and faith will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Listowel on Friday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., and reception in the church hall to follow. Rev. James Clark officiating.
