I met Roy for the first time in November 2014 when, as a representative of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Government of Canada, I accompanied Roy and his daughter Wendy to Italy to help commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Italian Campaign. Roy had fought in World War 2 as a very you young man and he was invited to return to Italy to re-visit parts of that country he helped liberate 70 years previously There were several other veterans on the trip but I beleive at 92 years of age Roy my have been the eldest member of the delegation. After a very long trip from Ottawa, followed by another lengthy bus ride we arrived at our hotel destination. Later in the evening I was relaxing in the lounge and that was the first time I met Roy. He noted that I spoke Italian and he asked me to order him a beer which I did. We joked and had our drinks and around midnight knowing I had to be up very early the next morning, I excused myself Roy had another beer and asked me where I was going. I said I was so tired so I was going to bed. He looked at me and said "have a good night" and continued enjoying his beer. A 92 year old man put at 50 year old to bed. My first, but not my last, of many many fond memories with Mr. Roy Bean. I was privileged to meet this hero!
