This story goes back to about 1980 when I was fairly new to Listowel. George was having a barbeque and the women of the house were gone. So it was just George, Pat, Mike, and myself. George was kind enough to invite me to stay. George "might" have had to go put another log on the fire since it was only mid July and the house wasnt quite warm enough. So he left Mike and I in charge of the burgers. Being two young guys, we took turns flipping the burgers but our skills were not that refined. After a few attempts, I had managed to put one burger through the grill and right on the brickettes. For about 4 minutes, Mike and I tried our best to pick that burger off the red hot charcoal. After managing to do that and "NOT" telling anyone. When it came time to serve the meal, Mike and I picked a corner off the bun because there was no way either of us were going to eat that overcooked burger. Now we didnt think about the fact that there was a chance George would pick it. As luck would have it, Pat took one for the team without knowing it. Half way through the meal, George asks how Pats burger was. He politely said "great" because it had to be, George had cooked it. When Mike asked him if it was a "wee bit crunchy"....I couldn't control myself. I dont know if i've ever laughed any harder in all my life and George was so patient with me, to this day i dont know how he didnt say something to make me stop my laughter. (and Mike's) Pat, I hope this isnt the first time your hearing about this story, if so i'm sorry. But its a moment of my life that i still remember quite well even after 35 yrs and usually comes up with each visit to Paddyfest. George will truly be missed in the Listowel and surrounding communities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Basler family.
